Low Carb Dieting Works Best
This according to the longest and largest diet study ever done.
This is also consistent with my personal experience. But exercise with free weights is the other half of the equation.

My personal experience is that low sugar diets work best.
Over the last four months I've continued to eat as many carbs as I usually do (which is quite a lot). But I've mostly switched to whole grain and I've eliminated as much of the sugar (sucrose, fructose, etc., yada yada) as I can.
My exercise regimen hasn't changed at all, but I've still lost twenty pounds.

Interesting that the Mediterranean diet was pretty close to the low-carb. From a sustainability standpoint, I would figure a Med diet to be easier to stick with than either a low-fat or a low-carb diet.
