FastForward Radio

Sunday night Stephen Gordon was joined by guest cohost Michael Darling. Michael is a longtime commenter and independent thinker at the Speculist.

Among many other topics they talked about the Star Trek technologies that are becoming real world inventions. No. Quick and easy (and routine) plastic surgery is not, yet, one of those technologies. But just about everything else is becoming, at least, theoretically possible.

The topics:

  • The New York Giants won a very cold game against the Green Bay Packers. They will be meeting the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

  • Michael gave a positive review for Denzel Washington's Deja Vu. The critics were not as kind.

  • Stephen hated Sandra Bullock's "Premonition." But practically nobody liked that movie. If you want to see Sandra Bullock in a time travel movie, rent "Lake House" again.

  • Methuseleh Yeast. Do we have a "Wondering Ecuadorian?"

  • Was Nikola Tesla a time traveler?

  • The Star Trek technologies that are now becoming real world inventions.

  • Growing new organs that are a perfect match for patients by using protein scaffolding in the shape of the organ and the patient's own progenitor cells. It's the Chia heart!

  • Stephen is glad for eyeglasses. This is not a new technology, but what a difference it makes for those who need them.

  • We're witnessing a race to bring plug-in hybrid vehicles to market. Today's nonplugin's have environmentally unfriendly nickel cadmium batteries. The plug-ins will have safe Lithium Ion batteries.

  • Looking for a bright side, Michael mentioned that one Nickel mine has been used to make the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory in Ontario. More here.

  • Here's a picture of the Tango:

  • Phil was able to join us briefly. He does recommend the film "Cloverfield."

Our front bumper is a sample of Marginal Prophets' "The Difficult Song."

Our exit music this week is from CSHC. The song is "World War Z."
