It's not just Australian dolphins, I've seen dolphins surfing here in California. I used to work about two blocks from the beach so I'd take my lunch down there and watch for whales and dolphins.

They are fishing I think. Saw them doing the same thing on Planet Earth. They like to trap fish between the waves and the shallows.
