Since Carl Sagan made sure that there were no mentions of religion of any kind on the gold records included on our extra-solar-system spacecraft, my own theory is that first contact is going to be missionaries. "Those poor Earth people! They've never even heard about God!"

Hmmm... well there would have to be a whole lot of sigs, because someone would have to have created the author of us, and then someone would have had to create the author of him or her, and so on and so forth. Unless it is just the simple trail of the big bang of course.
