Reasonably Fast

At 60.6 kilometres per hour, the elevator described here is the world's fastest. But I think we'll need to do quite a bit better than that (speedwise) for the really big elevator.

I read somewhere that the first space elevators will have to limit themselves to cargo because they would be too slow.

Not because passengers would get bored with the long ride (they'd have a heck of a view), but because they would get too much radiation.

Hey, we're talking about a SPACE ELEVATOR here! If we get the technology to build that, surely we'll be able to build better shielding.
