Crime Rate Down

There's been a good deal published in recent years about the steep rise in the rate of violent crime in London. I was therefore highly interested to discover that, from a big-picture perspective, the rate of violent crime in Britain seems to have dropped quite a bit:

IF YOU are worried about being attacked or killed by a violent criminal, just be glad you are not living in Neolithic Britain. From 4000 to 3200 BC, Britons had a 1 in 14 chance of being bashed on the head, and a 1 in 50 chance of dying from their injuries.

Wait. This must be some kind of mistake. Early tool-making people lived in harmony with nature and were peaceful and loving.

I'm baffled. You would almost think that we're better off today.

Well yeah, that's because it was before Christianity--you know, the real barbarians. There was milk and honey springing from the ground, everyone was equal, and school lunch was absolutely free. The educational system was the best! Kids achieved a PhD in knocking rocks together by age 5.

Then someone invented money and had a conservative thought, and it all went to hell in a handbasket.
